Deep within the mesmerizing rolling hills, resided a young shepherd. His being was essentially pure, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was essentially to care for his herd of sheep.

Their gentle baas and the rustling of the breezes across the lone tree on the mountaintop were his constant associates. Day in day, looking out for his charges instilled in him a notion of calm satisfaction.

Narratives of wild beasts preying on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a joke on the villagers.

One morning he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up here the hills to offer assistance but found no wolf.

The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This game laughed for a few days more. But, one morning, a real wolf did come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the results of dishonesty.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
